Teen Counseling in San Antonio

Adolescence has never been easy. But teenagers face a great deal of pressure today — academic demands, social comparison, identity questions, family stress, and a world that can feel overwhelming. All of this can push even resilient kids past their limits.

If your teenager is struggling, you’re not overreacting. And you’re not alone. At Green Mountain Counseling, we work with teens and their families throughout San Antonio to address what’s really going on and help young people build the skills they need to navigate the hardest years of growing up.

What Brings Teens to Therapy

Teens come to us for a wide range of reasons. Some have been struggling for a long time; others hit a wall after a specific event. Common reasons families reach out include:

  • Anxiety: perfectionism, school avoidance, social anxiety, panic attacks
  • Depression: withdrawal, loss of motivation, prolonged sadness or irritability
  • Trauma, including bullying, family conflict, abuse, or loss
  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Anger and behavioral challenges at home or school
  • ADHD and learning difficulties
  • Identity and LGBTQ+ concerns
  • Grief and loss
  • Disordered eating or body image struggles

Why Counseling Is Important for Teens

At this age group, issues surrounding identity and one’s peer group are at the forefront. When these challenges aren’t discussed openly, they often manifest in anxiety or depressive symptoms and can become quite severe. Teen’s have an increased capacity for actions. And that coupled with the emotional stability from younger years or recent traumas can result in significant behaviors such as running away, cutting or self-harming, suicidal thoughts or attempts, and truancy or violence. While these actions can occur at any age, they are most concerning in adolescence due to the teen’s increased physical abilities, freedom, and reliance on their peer group.

Our Approach to Teen Therapy

Working with teenagers requires a different approach than adult therapy. Teenagers are still developing their brains, their identities, their capacity for insight, and a skilled teen therapist knows how to meet them where they are rather than trying to force them into a format that doesn’t fit.

Our therapists use a blend of talk therapy and activity-based approaches, adapting to each teen’s communication style and comfort level. We take teens seriously. We don’t talk down to them. And we work hard to build genuine rapport before diving into hard topics because if a teenager doesn’t trust their therapist, nothing else works.

We also believe in keeping families appropriately involved. Parents and caregivers don’t need to be in every session, but family dynamics are part of almost every teen’s story. We offer family consultations and can bring parents into the process in ways that support, rather than undermine, the therapeutic work.
