Counseling for Suicidal Thoughts in San Antonio, TX

If you are in immediate crisis, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room.

If you’ve been having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, reaching out for help is the right move, and it takes real courage. We’re glad you’re here.

Suicidal thoughts exist on a spectrum. They can range from passive thoughts that life doesn’t feel worth living to more active thoughts about ending it. Whatever you’re experiencing, it deserves compassionate, professional support.

You’re Not Alone, and This Can Get Better

Suicidal thoughts are most often a symptom of depression, trauma, chronic pain, overwhelming stress, or a sense that there’s no other way out. They make sense as a response to unbearable pain, even when they’re not an accurate picture of reality or your future options.

The thoughts feel true. And while they often feel logical, they are not. Thoughts of suicide are a short-term fix that fails to take into account the possible outcomes for the years and decades ahead of you.

How We Approach Counseling for Suicidal Thoughts

Our therapists are trained to work with clients experiencing suicidal ideation. We don’t shy away from difficult conversations, and we won’t panic or overreact in ways that make it harder for you to be honest. We want to know what’s actually going on so we can actually help.

The work initially focuses on creating safety plans and decreasing the immediate concerns of intent and opportunity. From there, therapeutic approaches like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) have strong evidence for reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. We build safety, coping skills, and reasons for living, not just a list of rules about crisis plans.

We also work closely with psychiatrists and other providers when appropriate.
