Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions out there. It’s not about liking things neat, or being a perfectionist. It’s not a quirk. OCD is a cycle of intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that temporarily relieve the anxiety but ultimately make it worse.
The good news is that OCD responds to treatment. And you deserve care from someone who actually understands what you’re dealing with.
What OCD Actually Looks Like
OCD takes many forms, and not all of them look the way movies and TV portray it. Common presentations include:
- Contamination OCD — fear of germs, illness, or spreading harm; excessive washing or avoidance
- Harm OCD — intrusive thoughts about accidentally or intentionally harming oneself or others; fear of acting on these thoughts
- Checking OCD — repeated checking of locks, appliances, emails, etc.
- Symmetry/ordering — intense distress when things are “not right”
- Pure O — primarily mental compulsions (reassurance-seeking, rumination, mental reviewing) without visible rituals
- Relationship OCD — obsessive doubt about love, attraction, or compatibility
- Scrupulosity — religious or moral obsessions
One of the cruelest aspects of OCD is that the intrusive thoughts feel meaningful. People with harm OCD often believe that having the thought means something bad about who they are. It doesn’t. The content of OCD thoughts is ego-dystonic, meaning it conflicts with your values. That’s the nature of the disorder.
Effective Treatment for OCD Using ERP and CBT
The gold-standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is a specific form of CBT that involves gradually facing feared situations or thoughts without engaging in compulsive behaviors, allowing the anxiety to reduce naturally over time.
ERP is not about making you comfortable with something scary. It’s about breaking the cycle that keeps OCD going. It takes courage and real work, but it is highly effective.
Our therapists work with clients in a structured, compassionate way that respects both the difficulty of the work and the genuine relief it produces. We teach techniques that actually help so that you can reduce the anxiety associated with OCD over time.
