Living with bipolar disorder means navigating extremes. The highs that feel like finally being yourself and the crashes that can feel like losing everything you built during them. It’s exhausting. And it can be isolating, especially when others don’t understand why you can’t just “even out.”
At Green Mountain Counseling, we work with adults and teens in San Antonio who are living with bipolar disorder. We understand the complexity of the diagnosis and that what you need from therapy isn’t someone to talk you into being different, but a skilled partner in building a life that works.
Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by significant shifts between elevated or expansive mood states (mania or hypomania) and depressive episodes. There are several types, and presentations vary widely from person to person.
Manic episodes can involve elevated or irritable mood, decreased need for sleep, impulsivity, racing thoughts, and, in severe cases, decisions that cause real damage to relationships, finances, or careers. Hypomanic episodes are less intense but can still disrupt daily functioning. Depressive episodes share many features with major depression: low energy, hopelessness, withdrawal, and difficulty with everyday tasks.
Many people live for years without an accurate diagnosis, having been told they have depression, anxiety, a personality disorder, or that they’re just “a lot.” Misdiagnosis is common. If you’ve had that experience, you’re not imagining things.
How Therapy Helps with Bipolar Disorder
Therapy doesn’t replace medication for bipolar disorder — but it works powerfully alongside it. Research consistently shows that combined treatment (medication and therapy) produces better outcomes than either alone.
In therapy, we focus on:
- Psychoeducation — understanding your particular pattern of episodes, early warning signs, and triggers
- Mood monitoring and stabilization strategies
- Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) — building routines that support mood stability
- Cognitive work — addressing the thought patterns that can amplify or complicate mood episodes
- Relationship and communication support — for both you and the people in your life
We coordinate with psychiatrists and prescribers as needed and are comfortable working as part of a larger treatment team.
